LIMIT MULTITASKING; Pay more
attention to value than volume.
Sure we have all heard of
multitasking, and we know what it is.
First of all, let me make it clear,
multitasking is a good thing; it means you have the ability to do several
things at the same time. But to be honest with you, looking at it more
intently, I think multitasking drops value, and it takes the full shine off
something that should be glossier.
With multitasking, you’re trying to
do so much, you have your hands on different pies at the same time, you have
many things on your table, and you’re trying to sort them all at once, so you
will put little attention on many different things, and you probably will not
do anything excellently, because it is certain you cannot do everything
excellently.
Please don’t get me wrong, I am not
in any way now saying that you should focus on single tasking, because single
tasking is definitely too slow to make you succeed in this world that we are
living in. Most certainly, in this technology driven, 21st century
world, single tasking will make you left behind, because it will be too slow.
So what do we do? It is simple; pay
more attention to value. You need to identify the tasks that will create the
most value, focus on them, work on them, and please pay attention to them. You
need to prioritize and get your priorities right, prioritize value over volume,
sharpen your focus, and tilt more towards tasks that really matter. If you do
this, you will no doubt increase the quality of your work, and ultimately, you
will increase the quality of the value you provide.
Try and make
a “high value” or “top priority” list, so that you can
know the more important things, and the tasks that do not make the list should
be put on a “to do later” list, this
way, you will direct your energy to more fruitful and productive tasks.
You review
your “high value” or “top priority” list from time to time,
and if some tasks don’t upgrade or work their way up to the “high value” or “top priority” list, then you may need to ask yourself if you need
to do such tasks at all.
Multitasking
is fantastic, but you need to limit it and you need to set your priorities right. Pay more attention to value than volume.
You will win.
